Many significant financiers from developed countries are ready to invest in the country’s semiconductor chip manufacturing, according to the Ministry of Science and Technology.
The Vietnamese semiconductor industry is emerging as a destination for many semiconductor manufacturers and particularly attracting the attention and presence of the world’s leading “giants” from the United States and the Republic of Korea (RoK) such as Intel and Samsung. Their interest is mainly in investment in projects ranging from hundreds of million to billions of US$ in factory construction, as well as production and assembly lines.
Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Nguyen Hoang Giang said that many large investors from developed countries are keen to invest in Vietnam in the field of semiconductor chips. In the chip manufacturing process there are three stages, including design, manufacturing, along with packaging and testing.
In implementing the policy of promoting the semiconductor industry, the Ministry of Science and Technology will launch science and technology programmes, coupled with a series of tasks related to semiconductor chips.
“Through research, the Ministry will advise the Government on which part this industry should focus on, based on Vietnam’s resources and practices so that we can do this in the shortest, fastest, most successful way,” Deputy Minister Giang said.
According to Dam Bach Duong, since 2010, semiconductor chip products have been included in the list of national products by the Prime Minister, although this has not yet been done thoroughly. Currently, the Ministry of Science and Technology is actively carrying out tasks related to the research, design, and manufacturing of semiconductor chips.
According to the Ministry of Information and Communications, the semiconductor industry is a foundation industry which will also be a key national industry over the next 30 to 50 years.
As long as humanity continues to develop based on information and data as an input factor in production and data processing, semiconductor chips will continue to be important.
Developing the semiconductor industry also represents an opportunity for the nation to rebuild its own electronics industry, such as consumer electronics, medical electronics, and industrial electronics, especially as this industry is entering a transition phase to AI (artificial intelligence) electronics and IoT (Internet of Things) devices.
The semiconductor industry is also the core of the digital transformation industry, while the digital transformation industry makes up the largest market for semiconductor chips.
Boasting a population of 100 million people, Vietnam is a vast market and is in a stage of rapid development, rapid industrialization, rapid digital transformation, and high electronic consumption. This will be a favourable context for the development of the domestic semiconductor industry moving forward.
